China Syndrome is a Vancouver power pop band who combine the driving pop hooks of The New Pornographers, Sloan and Teenage Fanclub, with liberal dollops of classic rock influences. The band is led by singer and guitarist Tim Chan, formerly of indie stalwarts 64 Funnycars; Tim is also in Pill Squad, veteran garage punk ravers who played the 2016 Khatsahlano Street Festival. China Syndrome has been a fixture of the Vancouver indie music scene for over ten years, playing at venues all over Metro Vancouver and beyond. Their fourth album, Hide in Plain Sight, was released in late 2018 and has received praise–the Georgia Straight states the album “continues to showcase superb songwriting… with songs every bit as engaging, tuneful, angsty and varied in their influences;” The Vancouver Sun says it exemplifies “power pop done right… with a good sense of self-deprecation is always fun,” while BeatRoute feels the album demonstrates “interesting new layers to their sound.” All of China Syndrome’s albums were recorded and produced at Vancouver’s JC/DC Studio by David Carswell (The New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara, Destroyer, Apollo Ghosts).
